The Christmas holidays are undoubtedly a season of love and warmth, but scientists warn that you should be extremely careful when it comes to sexual relations. Experts have found that the Christmas period marks a high risk of penile fractures.
This happens as a result of strong bending during sexual intercourse. This is reported by The Guardian.
"This injury typically occurs during wild sex, especially in positions where you are not in direct eye contact with your partner," said Dr. Nicholas Pirgides, a urologist at Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich who led the research. A fracture is usually indicated by a cracking sound, accompanied by severe pain, rapid loss of erection, swelling and bruising.
Aware of the risks of such a sensitive topic, Pirgides and colleagues analyzed data from more than three thousand male patients who sustained penile fractures in Germany between 2005 and 2021. The result showed that the number of cases increases at Christmas. The study, published in the British Journal of Urology International, also determined that the risk is higher on weekends and during summer vacations.
"Most penile fractures occur in non-traditional scenarios, such as during extramarital sex or through sex in an unusual location," explained Pirgides, adding that men aged 40+ are at risk.
He advised couples to be aware of possible injuries and to exercise caution in the run-up to Christmas. "If this does happen, you should immediately contact your doctor, as there is a risk of serious complications," he said.
