Spring is a busy time for gardeners. It is important to take care of the soil, fertilize and plant shrubs that will become a real decoration of the garden, giving long and lush flowering.
OBOZ.UA has collected the best shrubs for a garden plot. These are quite unpretentious species that do not require careful maintenance, and some of them will delight you with flowering starting in early spring.
Forsythia
The yellow flowers of forsythia are real heralds of spring. The bush blooms in the second half of March, but the time and duration of flowering also depends on the type and variety of the plant. Forsythia is one of the easiest garden shrubs to grow and care for.
Lilac
Fragrant lilac has a short flowering period, but its rich, pleasant aroma cannot be confused with anything else. Gardeners often ignore this shrub because of its short flowering time, noticeable aggressiveness, and low decorative effect during the season when the shrub does not bloom (which is most of the year). However, breeders have developed compact lilac varieties, that have a longer flowering period, and a variety of colors.
Daphne
Another name for this plant is wolfberries, and some species are toxic. In gardens, hybrid varieties of daphne are grown that are the most winter-hardy. Flowering begins in the spring and can last up to a month, and in the fall, wolfberries appear on the bushes.
Magnolia
Magnolias used to be rare in our latitudes because they are very thermophilic plants. The following varieties will take root best in gardens: magnolia soulangeana, magnolia cobus, pointed, loebneri, and three-petaled. But the star magnolia (Magnolia stellata) should be planted with caution – it suffers from frost and grows slowly. Magnolia is a hardy plant that practically does not get sick and likes slightly acidic soil.
Almonds
This is another heat-loving plant, so you should be careful when choosing a variety. The following species are suitable: steppe or low almonds (Prunus tenella), three-lobed almonds (Prunus triloba), which are more commonly called flowering plums, Georgian almonds (Amygdalus georgica), and ledebouriana almonds (Prunus ledebouriana).
Rhododendrons
Gardeners advise choosing the Daurian rhododendron, which has delicate small flowers. Its main advantage is frost resistance. Rhododendrons grow in partial shade and like acidic soil.
Weigela
Depending on the variety, the ornamental shrub grows from 50 cm to 3 meters. The earliest species bloom in early May, covered with bright pink, white, or yellow flowers. Weigela can bloom twice a year: in spring and autumn, closer to September. They are not picky: they grow both in partial shade and in the sun on almost any soil, and tolerate drought.
Deutzia
Deutzia is considered one of the easiest shrubs to grow. It grows on almost any soil, prefers sunny areas, but can also grow in partial shade. It has lush, white or pink flowers.
Spireas
There are many types of spireas: some bloom in spring, others in fall. These are frost-resistant plants that bloom exclusively with white flowers on the shoots of the previous year. Spireas are unpretentious in care, and resistant to pests and diseases.
