How to save money in Barcelona

Barcelona has everything you need for the perfect vacation, from its luxurious coastline to its unusual architecture, from quiet park areas to bustling squares. But the prices in this city are sometimes exorbitant. So here are a few great tips on how to save money on a vacation in Spain's Catalan capital.

Check the schedule of open days at museums

Museums are one of the top reasons to visit Barcelona. Just for one ticket to a gallery or art space you will have to pay at least 10-15 euros. However, all such institutions have weekly open-door periods. Usually, it's a few hours in the afternoon or evening, when you can enter for free.

We advise you to visit the world-famous Picasso Museum, which has the original paintings of the artist. Enjoy free exhibitions in the galleries Centre de la Imatge and Center d'Art Santa Mònica.

Be sure to book your tickets in advance, even if they are free. It will save you from waiting in long lines at the box office.

Visit a festival

There is probably no city in the world that has more festivals than Barcelona. This is a great opportunity for tourists to attend a concert, a performance or just to dance to incendiary music for free.

For example, all summer residents and guests of the capital of Catalonia can watch a movie on the beaches as part of Cinema Lliure. In August the Festa Major de Gràcia traditionally begins with dozens of different concerts.

Admire the architecture

Barcelona is rich in architectural masterpieces. There's the Sagrada Familia, the striking Gothic Quarter, the Palau de la Música Catalana, Casa Batlló and dozens more. Of course, it will cost a lot of money to get inside. But you can also admire these works of art from the outside. You don't need to buy tickets or stand in line to do so.

Take a bike tour

Despite the expressive nature of the Spanish, Barcelona is a quiet city that does not like to be rushed. In order to see the interesting things to do in Barcelona, we suggest that you get on your bike.

There are many cycling routes in different parts of Barcelona. We recommend the Ronda Verda, which will take you through the picturesque surroundings of the city.

Visit the beaches

Barcelona's beaches are world famous. They are rightly called some of the best in Europe. Fortunately, most of them are free. But it's hard to say they're not crowded.

If you want to enjoy the views in silence, choose the beaches of the Costa del Garraf or the Costa Maresme, which are regularly served by public transport.

Take in the beauty of the city from above

You don't need to hire a private helicopter or jump from a parachute. All you have to do is go up to the observation deck of the bunker at Del Carmel. In the past, this place was used as a secure bomb shelter. Thousands of Barcelonans could stay here at the same time. Nowadays, people climb the hill to admire the magical views.

By the way, if time permits, visit the local museum, where you will learn more about the purpose of the bunker and the history of the Spanish Civil War.

Visit Catholic cathedrals during services

Most of Barcelona's cathedrals have services in the morning and evening. During these times, entry is free for everyone, which can be a good opportunity to appreciate the beauty of these structures from the inside for free.

Remember, however, that a sacred process is taking place during these moments. Behave appropriately: don't take pictures all around, don't talk, don't walk around the cathedral. This may deeply offend the faithful.

Visit the markets

We have written many times that the real atmosphere of any city can be felt by visiting the local markets. These are unique locations that gather a lot of colorful features. So, if you want to understand Barcelona but not just see it, go to the Mercat de la Boqueria.

Here you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables, incredible ham, meat from farmers and other delicious ingredients.

Enjoy the beauty of the Citadel Park

During your vacation, you must visit Barcelona's most popular park. Here you will find a waterfall with fanciful sculptures, a lake where small boats float, an amazing pink church and the building of the Catalan Parliament.

If that's not enough, take a walk to the amusement park, where there are plenty of activities for both children and adults. But be warned, it doesn't come cheap.

Check out the local flea market

Many tourists believe that this is where you can find unique souvenirs that will surprise everyone you know. Interestingly, the Encants flea market has been around for more than seven centuries. The first mention of it dates back to 1300.
