Which indoor plants will bring the most health benefits: a list

Indoor plants can improve the microclimate at home

Taking care of indoor plants is already good for your health. Firstly, it's a great hobby that relieves stress and improves mood. Secondly, living greenery indoors is very useful for peace of mind. Certain species can purify the air, reduce or increase humidity, repel insects, and even promote sleep. You just need to know which indoor plants are the most beneficial for your health and choose them according to your needs.

OBOZREVATEL has compiled a list of such plants. Think about what benefits you would like to get and take a closer look at these options. Perhaps you will find your own.

Air purification

Chlorophytum - this light green bush with striped leaves will effectively eliminate formaldehyde, toluene, xylene and other vapours that can be released from furniture, textiles and building materials indoors. It is also completely safe for children and pets.

Asplenium - a brightly coloured fern is called the "green liver" for its ability to neutralise a whole host of physical, biological and chemical air pollutants. Moreover, it can reduce sound pollution to some extent if you grow a large and dense bush.

Dracaena - Different types of dracaena have slightly different absorption capacity, but all of them purify the air from harmful gases. Choose a species according to your taste and space.

Aloe vera - it is recommended to place it in a room that has recently been renovated. The plant will absorb the vapours from all glues, paints, varnishes, etc.

English ivy - this plant will thrive even in dark and cool rooms, because its homeland is Europe. It will purify the air from harmful fumes and even mould spores. But it is better to keep this flowerpot away from children and animals.

Sansevieria is a champion in cleaning the air from harmful substances. At the same time, it is able to produce oxygen even at night. To help it filter the air, simply wipe its leaves from time to time.

Reducing humidity

Spathiphyllum is a flower that loves moisture so much that it absorbs it not only from the soil but also from the air. Therefore, it will only feel better in excessively humid rooms.

Epipremnum - if a plant has aerial roots, it means that it absorbs moisture from the air through them. This unpretentious vine follows this simple rule.

Tillandsia is a plant belonging to the bromeliads, that is, it is a relative of the tropical pineapple. This means that moist air is its element. It feeds on this moisture, dehumidifying the air to an acceptable level.

Cacti - all cacti are used to living in conditions where there is very little water, so they are programmed to absorb it in all possible ways. Including from the air.

Orchid - this plant does not naturally live in the soil, but rests on the bark of trees, so it consumes moisture largely from the air. Therefore, an increased level of water vapour in the room will only make the flower happy.

Increase the humidity

Areca palm - this palm has the highest level of transpiration among indoor plants, that is, it releases a lot of moisture into the air, consumed through the roots. In principle, this indicator is high for all palms, and you can choose a variant according to your taste and the size of the room, because areca is still a rather large plant.

Ficus elastica - the large, hard leaves of this plant generously evaporate moisture and saturate the air in the room with it. The main thing is to wipe the plant from dust in time. In general, this is a fairly clear indicator: the more leaves a plant has, the more it gives off liquid.

Fragrant Dracaena - in the course of its life, this plant releases almost all the moisture it consumes. And at the same time it freshens the air.

Nephrolepis - ferns naturally live in moist soil, so they are good at removing excess water that they can get through their roots. Nephrolepis is perhaps the most effective species that can be grown at home.

Schefflera - this plant grows rapidly, increases its leaf mass and thus enhances the effect of saturating the air with moisture.

Repelling insects

Dionea is a carnivorous plant that deals with mosquitoes and flies in a very simple way. It eats them. This is why it got its second name - Venus flytrap. It is not very easy to take care of the dionea, but watching it hunt is extremely fascinating.

Aromatic herbs - rosemary, basil, mint, sage, etc. - not only smell good and complement the taste of dishes. Their scent also repels insects. So it makes sense to sow them on your kitchen windowsill for the summer.

Catnip, a herb that is bought for cats to improve digestion, has a smell that various insects simply cannot stand. From mosquitoes to ticks. You'll just have to hide a bush or two from your furry friend if you want to enjoy the effect of the plant for a long time.

Marigolds - even rabbits can't stand the smell of these flowers, let alone insects. You can decorate a window or balcony with a flowering plant for the summer, it will not let uninvited guests in. The smell may be too strong for an indoor environment.

Chrysanthemums - have similar properties to marigolds, but smell a little weaker, so they can be grown indoors. They will purify the air well.

Improve sleep

Lavender - aromatic oil from the flowers of this plant is recommended for insomnia. But you can also decorate your bedroom with a small bush. Its scent during flowering will help you relax and fall asleep faster.

Valerian - Valerian has perhaps the strongest calming properties. Although we are used to growing it in the open field to get its healing root, it feels great in a pot. During the flowering period, its petals can be added to the bath.

Jasmine gardenia is also a good option for lovers of aromatherapy before bedtime. The delicate scent of the plant's flowers helps you relax faster and deeper.

Passionflower - suitable for people with high anxiety. Its aroma helps to combat this problem and improves sleep even in people suffering from chronic stress.
