Hollywood actor Viggo Mortensen, known for his role as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings, gave a speech in Ukrainian during his visit to the Mykolaychuk OPEN film festival in Chernivtsi. The video of his speech went viral on social media.

The attempt to speak Ukrainian was an initiative of the artist himself. Although Mortensen doesn't speak the language at all and cooks with an accent, he even apologized for it. The audience supported his attempts to "Ukrainize" with applause. A video capturing the actor's emotions was posted on Instagram by one of the audience members named Marina.

"Thank you for inviting our movie to your festival. It is a great honor to be here and share our story with all of you," the actor said in Ukrainian.

He had written this part of his speech on a piece of paper in advance, and read it from there. Later, the actor jokingly apologized to the Ukrainians for his accent, but his emotions showed his utmost enthusiasm for the event he was attending.

"I apologize for running over your language twice with my car. And on a more serious note, I am also proud to be here because this is Ukraine. And it is a great, independent, strong nation, and it should remain so," he continued.

At the presentation of his western film "The Dead Don't Hurt" in Chernivtsi, Viggo Mortensen, who has been supporting Ukraine and helping Ukrainians abroad since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, said that it is important for him to have a conscious position. "I didn't do anything out of the ordinary, I was just not indifferent. It is a great honor for me to hear the words of gratitude from Ukrainians and to be at this festival," the famous actor said in Chernivtsi.

"Viggo Mortensen presented his film The Dead Don't Hurt. Viggo Mortensen himself is the screenwriter, producer and director. He also wrote the music for the movie and played one of the main roles brilliantly. It's a decent movie. It raises the importance of the question of choice. You involuntarily draw parallels with Ukraine today, and it turns out that these parallels are not accidental, because the author feels the same way about his film. It is dedicated to Viggo's mother. It also turns out that Viggo loves and knows how to joke. I was glad to meet you, Aragorn from childhood," the girl who posted the video told us more about the movie and Viggo Mortensen's role in it.

The actor said the reason for his trip was to "explore the region" and discuss the issue of demining. He has been supporting Ukraine since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion.
