Mykola Tomenko is a Ukrainian politician.

Brief biography

Mykola Tomenko was born in Cherkaschina, in the village of Malye Kanevtsy 11.12.1964.

He received his higher education in the National University of Ukraine named after Shevchenko, from which he graduated in 1989.

From 1983-1985 Mykola Tomenko fought in Afghanistan in the Soviet Army, due to which he was forced to temporarily suspend his studies at the University.

He was one of the organizers of the founding congress of the People's Movement of Ukraine.

From 1993 to 1994, he worked in the Ministry of Nationalities and Migration.

From 1997 to 1998, Mykola Tomenko headed the Political Science Department in Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.

In 1998 he was a candidate of the party "Reforms and Order", but the party failed to enter the Parliament.

From 2000 to 2001 Mykola Tomenko headed the information and press department of Kyiv City State Administration.

In 2002, he was elected an MP from the Our Ukraine party. During the 2004 presidential election, Mr. Tomenko participated in Victor Yushchenko's election campaign, acting as his proxy.

After Yushchenko's victory, Mykola Tomenko was Deputy Prime Minister for Social and Humanitarian Issues in Yulia Tymoshenko's Cabinet for almost the whole year of 2005. In September 2005 he resigned and two months later left the Reforms and Order party.

As a result Mykola Tomenko participated in the Parliamentary elections 2006 on the list of the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc. As a result, he occupied the post of the deputy speaker of the faction in the Verkhovna Rada, and in 2007 he remained on the post of the deputy speaker of the Verkhovna Rada for more than six months.

In the Verkhovna Rada of the seventh convocation Mykola Tomenko represented "Batkivschyna", but in 2014, soon after the end of the Revolution of Dignity, he left the party and remained in parliament as an unaffiliated MP.

In the 2014 snap elections to the Ukrainian parliament, Tomenko was elected as an MP from the BPP. However, in the last month of 2015, Tomenko withdrew from the faction of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc, and in the spring of 2016, by the decision of the BPP congress Mykola Tomenko was prematurely deprived of the status and powers of an MP of Ukraine.

Tomenko himself said that this decision of the political force of Petro Poroshenko is illegal and appealed to the Supreme Administrative Court of Ukraine to cancel the deprivation of his mandate.

Mykola Tomenko is the author of several monographs, including: "History of the Ukrainian Constitution", "Theory of politics", "Ukrainian romantic Nikolai Gogol". Also on his account are about one hundred researches and journalistic articles.

He is also an initiator and organizer of the national Ukrainian campaigns "7 Wonders of Ukraine" and "7 Natural Wonders of Ukraine".
