Ukraine national team lost to Italy in Euro 2024 qualifying with Yarmolenko's goal
The Ukrainian national team has lost to Italy in the 6th round of qualifying for the European Football Championship. The match at the San Siro Stadium in Milan ended with a score of 2:1.
As in the previous game with the English, our opponent had the initiative from the first minutes.
Ukraine gave a lot of space to the Italians between the lines, which they successfully used. The Italians continued to press, forcing Heorhiy Buschan to enter the game.
In the 12th minute, Sudakov's failed. The Shakhtar player fell down, losing the ball. Zaccagni picked it up, passed it to Frattesi and the 23-year-old Sassuolo midfielder, who plays at Inter, opened the scoring.
After scoring, the Scuadra Azzurra continued to press, demonstrating the significant difference in class. The fires and chaos in the Ukrainian penalty area continued time after time.
We lacked something that Italy had in abundance, which is the transfer of the ball from flank to flank. Our team could not get a grip on the ball, mostly working unsuccessfully in the selection.
The pace of the game seriously dropped in the middle of the half Spalletti's charges just rolled the ball in the center of the field waiting for our players to act.
Italy scored the second goal in the 30th minute. Frattesi, who seemed to linger in front of our goal, scored. The goal was initially disallowed, but the referee then pointed to the center of the field after a VAR prompting.
Artem Dovbyk scored in the 36th minute.
The hosts held the advantage, but Ukraine managed to reduce the gap. A precise pass to Dovbyk, the Girona's forward shot at the goalkeeper and Andriy Yarmolenko's rebound.
The Ukrainians started the second half much more aggressively. During the opening minutes of the second half, the guests managed to conduct several quick counterattacks, which were completed by Dovbyk and Tsyhankov. Girona players failed to hit the crossbar.
Rebrov released Mudryk and Yaremchuk, replacing Yarmolenko and Dovbyk in the 57th minute, but it did not affect the aggressions in attack.
Italy's attacks were much more dangerous, with Locatelli's shot hitting the crossbar in the 69th minute.
Italian players successfully dried up the end of the game, retreating into defense. The Ukrainians had a few chances, but it never came to a real opportunity to save the draw.
Ukraine dropped to third place in the standings. The next match will be held on October 14 against North Macedonia.
The Ukrainians lost to England in the 1st round on March 26 with a score of 0:2 at the legendary Wembley in London and then extracted a willful victory in Skopje over Northern Macedonia (3:2). They defeated Malta at the Anton Malatinsky stadium with a minimal gap.
