Which car will be the first to pass an unregulated intersection

Unregulated intersections are some of the most dangerous sections of the road. The absence of traffic lights can lead to chaos and accidents if drivers don't know or follow the rules of the road.

To help you test your traffic knowledge, the YouTube channel Za! Rules YouTube channel has prepared a tricky test task. Read on and make sure you don't create dangerous situations at unregulated intersections.

Traffic rules provide clear guidance on how to behave in a variety of situations that may arise on the road. But sometimes their interpretation can be difficult.

Take a look at the picture and try to answer correctly. In which order will the drivers drive in the situation shown?

Which car will be the first to pass an unregulated intersection: a difficult task in traffic rules
  • A. yellow and blue at the same time, and then red
  • B. red and then yellow and blue at the same time
  • C. yellow car, red, blue
  • D. blue, red, yellow

The picture shows an unregulated intersection. The yellow and red cars turn left and the blue car turns right.

Since this intersection is not equipped with traffic lights, we can determine the order of traffic by using road signs.

According to signs 2.2 "Driving without stopping is prohibited" and 2.1 "Make way", as well as signs 7.8 "Main road direction", the yellow car is on the main road. The red and blue cars are on secondary roads.

Therefore, it is obvious that the driver of the yellow car should be the first to pass, and the drivers of the other vehicles will decide the order of passing among themselves.

They will be guided by traffic rule 16.12 and sign 2.2 "STOP", which requires not only to let vehicles moving on the main road, but also those on the equivalent road to the right.

16.12. At the intersection of equivalent roads, the driver of a non-rail vehicle is obliged to give way to vehicles approaching from the right, except at intersections where circular traffic is organized.

This rule is also commonly known as the "Obstruction rule on the right". According to this rule, a red car is an obstacle on the right side for a blue car, and therefore has the right of way.

Therefore, the correct answer is C.

Tips for drivers:

  • Slow down before passing an unregulated intersection;
  • Look around carefully to make sure that nothing is in your way;
  • Be prepared to stop if you are blocked by traffic coming from the right;
  • Turn on your signs to let other drivers know what you are doing;
  • Follow the traffic rules and be careful on the road.
