Every time we buy new glasses or goblets, we are delighted with their transparency and shine. However, after a few months, the glass becomes dull and can no longer be placed on the table. The reason for this is the hard water that flows from most of our taps and is used by dishwashers in particular. Therefore, the question of how to clean glasses to a shine remains constantly relevant, especially for those who welcomes family and friends at home.

The Good Housekeeping publication cites two reasons for glass clouding. First of all, it is a deposit of minerals contained in the water, and the second is the dishwasher.

If the cause is hard water

Vinegar is the best way to deal with cloudiness on glass due to calcium, magnesium, and other metal salts that are abundant in our tap water. Baking soda can enhance its effect. A microfiber towel will also be needed.

Pour vinegar into a large container and soak all glassware that has become cloudy for 5 minutes. You can use the same method for vases.

If the product does not work, heat it. Due to the high temperature, it will act more actively and dissolve mineral deposits. However, be careful as glass can crack if the temperature is too high.

If there are still stains or streaks, rub them with a little baking soda. The baking soda will act as a mild abrasive and scrape off the stain without damaging the glass. To make it even more gentle, mix it with water to make a paste.

After cleaning, wash glassware by hand under warm or cold water.

Wipe glasses with a lint-free cloth such as microfiber. This will gently polish them without leaving any fine particles on the surface, as is the case with cotton towels. Do this immediately before the water droplets dry on the glass and leave new stains.

If the glass is cloudy due to dishwasher use

Unfortunately, dishwashing can damage your glassware. Although hard water doesn't stay on the surface of the object, microscopic salt particles scratch the glass, making it look cloudy. The hot water used to treat the dishes is not good for this material either as it can cause microcracks and chips. It will be impossible to do anything about these scratches and damage.

Therefore, experts advise washing glass only by hand and wiping it thoroughly. If you still do not want to do this, follow these instructions:

  • Add the minimum amount of detergent specified in the instructions;
  • Do not overload the machine when washing glasses in it: the water should drain freely;
  • Make sure that other dishes that you wash with the glass are free of hard food residues as they can also scratch the surface;
  • Take out and wipe the glasses immediately after the washing cycle is complete. Do not leave them to dry in the machine.
