
Roberta Metsola
Roberta Metsola is president of the European Parliament and former deputy speaker.
Brief biography
Metsola was born on January 18, 1979. She is a citizen of Malta.
She received her higher education at the University of Malta and the College of Europe in Bruges. Metsola is a lawyer specializing in European law and European politics.
From 2004 to 2012 she worked at the Mission of Malta to the EU as Attaché for Legal and Judicial Cooperation.
Subsequently, she was a legal adviser to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs.
She was first elected to the European Parliament in 2013. A year later, she was re-elected with a record number of votes.
She is an active defender of women's rights and an advocate of an open European Parliament.
On January 18, 2022, she became the first female speaker of the European Parliament since 1999.

Metsola is married with three children.
