Peter Pellegrini
Peter Pellegrini is the President-elect of Slovakia and former Prime Minister.
Brief biography
Peter Pellegrini was born on October 6, 1975 in the town of Banská Bystrica.
He received his higher education at Matej Bela University (Banská Bystrica) and at the Technical University (Košice). By education he is an economist.
He entered politics in 2006, when he was elected a deputy to the National Council from the party "Kurs - Social Democracy". During his time in Parliament, he served on the committees for Economic Policy, Mandate and Immunity, and Finance and Budget.
In 2012-2014, he was State Secretary in the Slovak Ministry of Finance.
In July-November 2014, he chaired the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport.
In 2014-2016, he also served as Speaker of the Slovak Parliament.
Subsequently, he became Deputy Prime Minister Robert Fico for Investment and Informatization. He held the position for two years, after which he succeeded Fico as prime minister and headed the Slovak government from March 2018 to March 2020.
He speaks English, German and Russian.
Presidential election
In April 2024, Pellegrini won the presidential election, receiving 53% of the vote in the second round.
Position on the war in Ukraine
Pellegrini is the leader of the Voice - Social Democracy party, part of Fico's coalition government, known for its pro-Russian stance. Like Fitzo, he opposes supporting Ukraine and its membership in NATO.
Pellegrini believes that his country should not fulfill what "Washington and Brussels dictate."
